In a plot twist that would make your favorite indie movie proud, Undead Labs has officially cut the cord from Xbox and is now an independent, employee-owned studio. It’s like watching your best friend finally leave that toxic relationship, and you just know they’re gonna thrive on their own!

Known for conjuring up zombie apocalypses in their game *State of Decay*, the team assures us that chaos and survival are still their jam. They’re forging ahead with *State of Decay 3*, scheduled to drop in 2027, which will be available on Xbox, PC, and even PlayStation. That’s right, folks—no platform left behind!

And if you thought Undead Labs was the only one getting their freedom anthem, you’d be wrong. They are the third studio to break free from the corporate clutches of Xbox, following in the footsteps of Double Fine and Compulsion Games. Meanwhile, poor Ninja Theory is still in limbo, possibly flirting with closure. Talk about being the last kid picked in gym class!

So, why should you care? Well, for starters, less corporate oversight means more creativity, which could bring us some truly epic games (or at least one that doesn’t crash every five seconds). Plus, who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Undead Labs is ready to show us what they can pull off when they aren’t tethered to the big machine.

What do you think about this new direction? Are you excited to see what this invigorated Undead Labs will bring us, or are you hoping the undead stay in their own lane?
