Happy birthday, Windows 10! Can you believe it’s been a whole decade since Microsoft introduced this icon of operating systems? It feels like just yesterday we were teetering on the edge of thin edges and pastel backgrounds, hoping it wouldn’t crash on our weekly Zoom calls.

When it first hit the scene, Windows 10 redefined how we saw operating systems by introducing the concept of “Windows as a service.” Gone were the days of waiting several years for the next big update! Instead, we got regular updates, kind of like that friend who insists on sending a motivational quote every day at 6 AM. Inspirational, but also a little exhausting.

And here we thought Windows 10 was the last hurrah for the Windows family! Spoiler alert: Microsoft had other plans and rolled out Windows 11, proving that the party was far from over. If Windows 10 was your chill friend who’s always down to watch a movie, Windows 11 is the flashy new roommate who shows up with neon lights and requires a fancy setup.

Fast forward 10 years later: Windows 10 is like that beloved family dog who still thinks it’s a puppy, even when it’s time to be retired. Despite Microsoft’s ongoing push to migrate users to Windows 11 (possibly with more carrot than stick), Windows 10 still holds a surprisingly large fan base. Let’s be real: if you’ve found a way to dodge all those updates, why would you leave?

As the countdown to Windows 10’s end of support approaches this October, it makes you wonder—what are the lessons we’ve learned from a decade with this quirky OS?

Why does it feel like saying goodbye to a trusty old friend, even when we know new adventures—or at least fewer bugs—await us?
