Imagine TikTok strutting onto the global stage with its sparkling new cape, proclaiming, “I am now a super app!” It sounds a bit like a superhero origin story, but is it the next great leap or just another tech fad in the making?
In a recent episode of Semafor’s Mixed Signals podcast, Instagram’s head honcho, Adam Mosseri, spilled some tea about TikTok’s ambitions. He suggested that TikTok is taking notes from its Chinese predecessors and trying to transform into a super app like WeChat.
For those blissfully unaware, a super app is that magical Swiss Army knife you never knew you needed. It allows users to do everything from chatting with friends to ordering dumplingsโall in one place. While this model is popular in China, it’s met with some skepticism in other parts of the world.
So, will TikTok’s endeavor to do everything from social media to possibly online banking be a huge hit, or will it crash like a poorly timed viral dance? Only time will tell, but if TikTok’s past uploads are anything to go by, itโs already preparing for a wild ride.
