Grab your party hats, folks! The tech world is brewing up some drama as the first developer beta of macOS Tahoe appears to have kicked FireWire to the curb. Yep, you heard it right— that vintage IEEE 1394 standard, which Apple affectionately refers to as FireWire, might finally be getting the pink slip.
According to some sleuthing done on X and Reddit (because where else would you go for news?), the latest beta has officially ditched support for FireWire. This means no more connecting your ancient external drives, capturing footage from your beloved MiniDV cameras, or using that first-generation iPod that still holds your nostalgic mixtape.
Now, before you break out the tissues, remember that macOS Tahoe isn’t launching for a few more months. So there’s still a glimmer of hope that FireWire could make a surprise return, like a villain in a cheesy sequel. After all, the last computer Apple graced with this port was the 13-inch 2012 MacBook Pro, back when people cared more about their floppy disks than their Apple Watches.
Will we truly bid farewell to FireWire, or is it just a case of ‘out of sight, but not out of mind’? Only time will tell. But let this be a reminder: technology waits for no one, and sometimes, it leaves behind a trail of nostalgic bits and bytes.
