In a world where climate change feels like an unwelcome roommate that won’t leave, Bill Gates’ nuclear energy company, TerraPower, just received a crucial green light for its first power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has given the construction permit the ol’ stamp of approval after ensuring that it poses no immediate safety threats. So, if you were worried this was another way for Bill to turn your backyard into a reactor, breathe easy—at least for now.

However, hold your horses, because the NRC says we’ll have to wait about 18 months for the final licensing decision on this fancy advanced reactor. Seriously, though, can someone speed this process up? I have Netflix to catch up on and can’t keep waiting for clean energy!

So, is this the nuclear renaissance we’ve all been waiting for or just another chapter in the sci-fi genre of life where new technology is met with skepticism? Only time (and a whole lot of green energy) will tell!
