Have you ever accidentally deleted your favorite meme, then stared into the abyss of your life choices? Well, Australia just took that to the next level by yanking 4.7 million social media accounts off the grid in the blink of an eye!

That’s how many accounts went dark shortly after the nation’s new under-16 social media ban kicked in last December. Yes, you heard that right—4.7 million! It’s enough to make you wonder if social media is the new ‘Lord of the Flies’ but with TikTok dances instead of conch shells.

Out of those, the infamous Meta (a.k.a. Facebook) contributed a whopping 550,000 accounts to the black hole, with big players like TikTok, Reddit, and Snapchat contributing their fair share of gone-but-not-forgotten profiles. Just picture the chaos in group chats as teens probably had to unfollow their crushes for real, rather than through a mysterious “technical glitch.”

This decisive action from the Australian internet regulator raises eyebrows and questions: Are we protecting the kids or just making them more curious about what they can’t have? One thing is for sure: the digital age just got a bit more analog for the under-16 crowd.

So, is this a noble act of safeguarding innocence or a well-timed ploy to force kids to go outside? Let’s face it, Mom always said, ‘it’s good to get some fresh air!’
