In a move that could only be described as the corporate version of a bad breakup, Amazon has laid off around 100 people from the team behind its beloved gadgets—Alexa, Echo, and Zoox.
Yes, you heard that right! Alexa took a hit, and it seems that even our virtual assistants aren’t immune to the harsh realities of the tech industry. These job cuts were sadly deemed part of a “regular business review,” which sounds a lot nicer than it really is—like saying a hurricane is just a “temporary air disturbance.”
Since the beginning of 2022, Amazon has trimmed its workforce by a back-breaking 27,000—not quite a spring cleaning, but more like a full-on demolition. 2022 and 2023 saw significant cuts across various teams, but it’s pretty clear that Alexa and her gang were hit hard.
With all these layoffs, one has to wonder: How many Amazon employees are necessary to keep a digital assistant running? Asking Alexa might just result in a very awkward silence. So, is this a sign that even tech giants are feeling the heat? Or are they just recalibrating their focus to prevent a digital meltdown?
