So, you thought Monday was just another day, huh? Well, not for AWS, which decided to play a game of ‘dodge the internet’ and managed to take large swaths of it offline for a solid 15 hours. AWS’s DynamoDB had a DNS hiccup that made everyone wonder if they were living in the 90s when dial-up ruled and websites took forever to load.
Amazon broke down this hilarious fiasco (not hilarious if you were affected, but you get what I mean) and revealed that the culprit was a DNS Planner gone rogue. In tech terms, that’s akin to a toddler running amok with a box of crayons—chaotic and utterly destructive.
In response to this little disaster, Amazon has put on its big boy pants. They’ve temporarily disabled the DNS Planner, added extra ‘just in case’ protections, and improved testing to avoid these kinds of face-palm moments in the future.
It’s a rocky road in the land of cloud computing, but like any good Netflix series, downtime just makes us appreciate the uptime more. Let’s see if AWS can bounce back from this blunder—or if they’re just waiting for another chance to go on vacation!
