Buckle up, folks! Waymo has just snagged its first robotaxi permit in the bustling concrete jungle known as New York City. Mayor Eric Adams dropped the news like it was hot, announcing that the Department of Transportation has given Waymo the green light to test up to eight autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn—complete with a safety driver behind the wheel.

Now, before you get too excited and think of the T-Rex chase scene in Jurassic Park, let’s not forget: these robotaxis still need a human in the driver’s seat.

Waymo, with its ambitious plans to eliminate that pesky requirement and operate without safety drivers, is eyeing a future where we can just sit back, relax, and let AI do the driving—unless, of course, the robots take over first. But hey, that’s a conversation for another day!

For now, NYC is stepping into the future, one driverless ride at a time. What’s next? Will we have robot baristas serving us overpriced lattes?
