In yet another plot twist that could fuel a South Korean telenovela, Lee Jae-yong, Samsung’s executive chairman and part-time survivor of courtroom dramas, has once again emerged victorious from the legal trenches. The Supreme Court of Korea waved its magic gavel and acquitted him of stock manipulation charges that would make even the smartest financial manipulator proud.
Back in February, a lower court had already given him the thumbs up, but prosecutors tried to add a plot twist to the story, appealing that decision. Spoiler alert: the countryโs higher-ups sided with Lee again. Who knew courtroom battles could be this riveting?
Now, this isnโt Lee’s first round in the legal ring. In 2017, he was convicted of bribery and embezzlementโbecause apparently, running a tech empire wasnโt dramatic enough. But fear not! He was released on appeal and even earned a pardon in 2022. Talk about a comeback! It’s like watching a season of your favorite show where the main character just refuses to stay down.
And here he is now, still steering the colossal ship that is Samsung, a company established by his grandfather. Letโs hope he has better luck in the boardroom than in the courtroom. Isnโt corporate drama just the best? If only the tech world had writers for soap operas, weโd never run out of material!
