Hold onto your smartphones! It looks like TikTok is diving headfirst into the EU’s regulatory hot seat. According to a preliminary investigation, the European Union suspects that TikTok might have swiped left on some serious advertising rules, specifically the Digital Services Act. In simpler terms, TikTok allegedly forgot to tell us who’s getting served ads, what those ads are about, and (most importantly) who’s footing the bill.
Now, we all know TikTok is a dizzying whirlpool of dance challenges and cooking hacks, but it seems the EU thinks they might be playing a dangerous game with transparency. If TikTok can’t charm its way out of this and convince officials that they were just testing the waters (and not deep-frying their ad strategy), they could face a fine that could cut as deep as 6% of their annual turnover.
Just weeks ago, TikTok got slapped with a cool $600 million fine for ignoring the GDPR. So, I guess the pressure is really on TikTok to make its appeal as entertaining as a viral cat video. Will they be able to save face and avoid a double whammy of fines? Or will the EU do a little happy dance while cashing in? Stay tuned for this unfolding social media saga!
